Points of Distinction
1.With a 10 to 1 ratio of students majoring in Psychology to Ph.D.-level faculty members, students receive personal attention, small classes, and no graduate teaching assistants in psychology courses.
2.The new innovative curriculum is unlike any other in the U.S.In addition to providing a strong psychology major, it allows students to have a special emphasis in any one of five areas: human resources/personnel psychology, human services, cognitive neuroscience, usability of technology, and leadership.We also offer certification from the State of Missouri in secondary education.
3.A survey of graduates over a 10-year period showed 98% attained their goal of employment, entry into a graduate or professional program, or both.
4.Missouri S&T psychology majors go on to graduate school, law school, and medical school, and are successful in careers in business, education, and non profit organizations.
5.Many undergraduate students participate in research resulting in co-authorship with the faculty at major professional meetings and in refereed journal articles.
6.The Psychology department ranks highest on campus as measured by the Committee on Effective Teaching Ratings of Overall Teaching Effectiveness, with an average rating of 3.5 out of 4.0.
7.Faculty members have received numerous Missouri S&T Outstanding Teaching Awards, Missouri S&T Faculty Excellence Awards, a Missouri S&T Distinguished Teaching Professorship, and the Governor's Award for Outstanding Teaching.
8.Faculty members have published textbooks, monographs, and research in leading technical journals.They also serve on editorial boards.
9.The program utilizes a newly renovated, centralized research laboratory with space available for undergraduate research projects.$1,000 stipends are available to support undergraduate research projects.
10.In addition to university scholarships, incoming freshmen and current students can qualify for several psychology department scholarships.
