Department Overview

Psychology is the science of mind and behavior, including how humans grow and develop as individuals, and as members of groups, organizations, and society. Areas of basic study include learning, cognitive, neuroscience, sensation/perception, social psychology, developmental psychology, abnormal psychology and personality psychology. Applied areas of psychology include clinical psychology, school and educational, industrial psychology, organizational behavior, human-computer interaction, and human factors engineering or ergonomics.

The study of psychology is excellent preparation for many jobs and professions. Graduate level professions such as medicine and law, as well as employers of bachelor's level degrees, are interested in both the research and the "people" skills that psychology graduates possess. Psychology students learn how to collect, analyze, and interpret data and develop the skills for getting along with and successfully working with others.

MAJOR PROGRAMS

The department offers a choice of two undergraduate degrees (the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Science) and three graduate certificate programs. The innovative curriculum at Missouri S&T is unlike any other in the U. S. In addition to providing a strong psychology major, students may opt to develop a special emphasis in any of five areas: human resources/personnel psychology, human services, cognitive neuroscience, usability of technology, and psychology of leadership. The department also offers degrees that allow certification from the State of Missouri to teach in secondary schools.

MINOR PROGRAMS

Minor programs are offered allowing the student to select from a variety of courses tailored to their needs. A minor in psychology can provide a foundation in the social and behavioral sciences, and at the same time, help prepare Missouri S&T science, engineering, and business students to cope with the human side of technologies and organizations. The department offers a general 15 hour minor, a 15 hour minor in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, The Psychology of Leadership, and a minor in cognitive neuroscience.

GRADUATE CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

Three graduate certificates are offered by the Psychology Department: Psychology of Leadership offered in partnership with the department of Information Science and Technology. Leadership in Engineering Organizations offered in partnership with the department of Engineering Management and Systems. Psychometrics offered in partnership with the department of Mathematics and Statistics. Each of these graduate certificates upon successful completion will allow a student entrance into the respective department's graduate program. Each program has its own admission requirements.
