Graduate Certificates

The Department of Psychological Science offers three graduate certificates open to all persons holding a Bachelor's, Masters, or Ph.D. degree who have the required pre-requisites for the courses offered.  The three Certificates offered are:  Psychology of Leadership, Leadership in Engineering Organizations, and Psychometrics.

 

Psychology of Leadership  (Offered by the Department of Psychological Science and the Information Science & Technology Department)

Overview:  Managers in organizations today face constant change and continuing need to interact effectively with individuals both up and down the management structure.  this Certificate program is designed to provide formalized education in the area of Psychology of Leadership in order to assist in preparing to meet these challenges.  A student must have an average cumulative grade of 3.0 or better in the Certificate courses in order to receive the Graduate Certificate.

Curriculum:  (3 courses from the following):

    Psychology 308-Social Psychology; Psychology 316-Psychology of Leadership; Psychology 374-Organizational Psychology; IST 348-Strategic Enterprise Management Systems; and IST 351-Leadership in Technology-Based Organizations.

And a fourth course from the following:

    Psychology 350-Psychology of Women; Psychology 372-Group Dynamics; Psychology 387-Social Influence; IST 480-Social Informatics; and IST 487-Research Methods in Human-Computer Interaction.

 

Leadership In Engineering Organizations (Offered by the Department of Psychological Science and the Engineering Management & Systems Department)

Overview:  The Departments of Psychology and Engineering Management and Systems Engineering offer the interdisciplinary Certificate program entitled "Leadership in Engineering Organizations."  This Certificate program aims to equip students with a set of tools that will allow them to become effective leaders of groups, programs, and departments engaged in engineering and technology work.  Specifically this Certificate program will enable the graduate to; understand the technical leadership roles in engineering organizations, understand and develop a personal leadership style, develop the skill to critically analyze, evaluate, improve, or adapt existing technical and/or managerial systems, and organize and lead complex projects, groups, and organizations.

The Leadership in Engineering Organizations Certificate curriculum consists of four courses:  Engineering Management 301-Leadership for Engineers, Engineering Management 313-Managerial Decision Making, Psychology 316-Psychology of Leadership, and Psychology 374-Organizational Psychology.

 

Psychometrics (Offered by the Department of Psychological Science and the Department of Math and Statistics)

Overview:  This Certificate program is designed to provide formalized education in the area of Psychometrics.  Psychometrics is a rapidly expanding field of study concerned with the theory and technique of psychological measurement, which includes the measurement of knowledge, abilities, attitudes, and personality traits.  The field is primarily concerned with the study of differences between individuals and includes two major research tasks: (1) the construction of instruments and procedures for measurement; and (2) the development and refinement of theoretical approaches to measurement.

Curriculum:  2 courses from the following:

    Psychology 301-Psychometrics, Psychology 307-Industrial Psychology, and Psychology 364-Theory and Practice of Psychological Testing

Additional 2 courses from the following:

    Statistics 346-Regression Analysis, Statistics 353-Statistical Data Analysis, and Statistics 444-Research Design.
