Curriculum & Courses

Bachelor of Arts in Psychology 120 hours

1. Basic Skills and Concepts: Composition: English 20 and one additional three-hour composition course - 6 hours

  • Western Civiliz. (Hist 111 and 112) - 6 hours

  • Foreign language - approximately 11-16 hours

2. Math and Science: Statistics 115 and at least one course taken in biology and one in the physical sciences (chemistry, geology, or physics).A laboratory must be included - 12 hours

3. Humanities: At least one course in each of the three areas of literature (English and American), philosophy, and fine arts (art, music and theater), but not to include studio and performance offerings. - 12 hours

4. Social Sciences: Twelve hours in at least two of the following areas: economics, history, political science, and sociology.- 12 hours

5. Minor:A minor will be selected from any discipline other than the major, with the approval of the student's advisor.Specific minor field requirements in each discipline are given in the Missouri S&T undergraduate catalogue.

6. Elective Credits:In consultation with his or her adviser, each student will elect sufficient additional courses to complete a minimum of 120 credit hours.

Bachelor of Science in Psychology 124 hours

1. Composition: English 20 and one additional three-hour composition course - 6 hours

2. Math and Science: A total of 23 hours in biological, physical (chemistry, geology, or physics), and mathematical (mathematics, statistics and computer science) sciences, to include Stat 115, Comp Sc 53 or 73 or IST 51) and at least one course taken in the biological and one in the physical sciences.Of the biological and physical science offering, at least one must be a laboratory course - 23 hours.

3. Humanities:Twelve hours in humanities and fine arts. Foreign language courses may count toward fulfilling this requirement. Courses used to satisfy this requirement must be taken in at least two humanities areas - 12 hours.

4. Social Sciences:Twelve hours in at least two of the following: economics, history, political science, and sociology - 12 hours.

5. Minor: A minor will be selected from any discipline other than the major with the approval of the student's adviser.Specific minor field requirements in each discipline are given in the entry of that discipline.

6. Elective Credits: In consultation with his/her adviser, each student will elect sufficient additional courses to complete a minimum of 124 credit hours.

7. Psychology Requirements for both BA and BS degree programs.

a. Required courses:

  • Introduction to Psychology (Psych 10), 1 hour

  • General Psychology (Psych 50), 3 hour

  • Experimental Psychology (Psych 140), 3 hours lecture; 1 hour lab

b.Three courses from the following core:

  • Sensation & Perception (Psych 220)

  • Theories of Learning (Psych 240)

  • Developmental Psychology (Psych 250)

  • Abnormal Psychology (Psych 262)

  • Social Psychology (Psych 308)

  • Cognitive Psychology (Psych 305)

  • Neuroscience (Psych 330)

c. Three courses from the following applied areas:

  • Educational Psychology (Psych 15)

  • Adolescent Psychology(Psych 208)

  • Industrial Psychology (Psych 212)

  • Human Factors (Psych 311)

  • Human- Computer Interaction (Psych 314)

  • Clinical Psychology (Psych 368)

  • Group Dynamics (Psych 372)

  • Organizational Psychology (Psych 374)

d. Capstone Course (either seminar or undergraduate research), 3 hours

e. Psychology electives to complete a requirement of 34 hours.

Secondary Education Certification

The department offers a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology (127 hours) and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology (135 hours) for secondary education certification in the State of Missouri.

Minor in Psychology

The department offers four minor optional degree programs in psychology that psychology majors may pursue. To qualify, students must take 15 hours of courses in psychology and at least nine of these hours must be at the 200-level or above.

The four options for a minor are:

  • Psychology of Leadership
  • Cognitive Neuroscience
